Our juicer finally arrived and we are so excited to start the next step in the vegan odyssey. Juicing is said to be a major key to restoring and maintaining health, and I am totally in. It’s also the easiest way to get extra fruits and vegetables down in one easy shot - just push them through a juicer and drink up!
So, what is Juicing?
Juicing extracts the liquid from fruits and vegetables, leaving the fiber behind. With the fiber gone all of the nutrients in the plants - vitamins, minerals and enzymes - instantly flood the body. While fiber is extremely important, juice acts as a great supplement, giving the digestive system a break and allowing us fewer calories, while taking in more nutrients. It also ensures we eat more of, and a wider variety of, vegetables and fruits than we normally would.
Wise Fact: Phytonutrients (phyto - meaning plant) are bioactive chemical compounds found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and grains. When ingested, they act as guardians inside us against free radicals and diseases. There is growing evidence to suggest they play a role in preventing and reversing heart disease, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. They may also protect you from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, reduce inflammation, and stimulate the immune system.
Fun Fact: Phytonutrients are what give fruits and vegetables their amazing colors.
For our juice preparation, we chose the Breville Juice Fountain Cold after watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead on Netflix, the very inspiring story of Joe Cross, who reversed his health and changed his life through juicing. You can find his story here.
Here’s a fun little video of our very first juicing experience, with a recipe from Joe's book, 101 Juice Recipes.
2 handfuls of spinach
2 ribs celery
The verdict is in – we love juicing and know you will too!
